Uptown Kingston Architecture:

From the Senate House to the Ulster County Office Building

At the annual meeting of the Friends of the Senate House, William Rhoads will present a slide talk, “Uptown Kingston Architecture: From the Senate House to the Ulster County Office Building.” Rhoads will demonstrate the rich variety of architectural styles in this section of the city, from the early stone houses of the Uptown Stockade Historic District through the Georgian or Federal style seen in the Sudam-Johnston House, to the Greek Revival of the former Kingston National Bank and the Gothic and Romanesque Revivals of several 19th-century churches. The variety of styles continued in the early 20th century, culminating in the Colonial Revival proposed for the Ulster County Office Building, but ultimately rejected in favor of a modern design which ignored the historic context of the city. Rhoads is a professor emeritus of Art History at SUNY New Paltz and a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Historic Kingston.
