Volunteers are vitally important to the success of the Friends of the Senate House. We value our volunteers’ time and talents, for without them, we would not be able to fulfill our mission of education and preservation. There are many different volunteer opportunities at the Senate House State Historic Site. Highlighted below are some, but not all of these opportunities. If you have a special talent you would enjoy sharing, please contact us! However, no special talent or prior experience is necessary!

Volunteer Interpreters

Here is your opportunity to share the great history of our Site. Volunteer as an interpreter and assist Senate House staff by conducting guided tours through the Senate House and/or provide exhibit information in our Museum during our Mid-April to October 31st season.

Friends of Senate House Gift Shop Volunteers

Gift shop volunteers answer questions, display merchandise, and assist with purchases during hours of operation which coincide with special events, educational programs and bus tours.

Hospitality Volunteers

Hospitality volunteers are needed during bus tours and special events. Volunteers help by welcoming visitors at the museum door and directing them to the gift shop and bathrooms.

Organizational Support

Computer skills, graphic design, photography, organizing mailings, entering data, and organizing educational materials: without these services, our events and programs will not reach the public.

Landscape and Gardening Volunteers

Our grounds are one of the most visible in the City of Kingston. We need many hands to help keep the property beautiful throughout the seasons. If you have a love of nature, enjoy the outdoors, or have a horticulture background, please contact us!

Community Service for Junior and High School Students

Opportunities for junior and high school students seeking community service credit are also available. Projects vary from assistance with special events, program preparation and cleanup, basic research, data entry, etc.

Special Event Volunteers

There are also many opportunities to serve on special events such as our Victorian Tea and Children’s Christmas Celebration.

Special Talents

Please let us know of your unique skills in research, cataloging, decorating, marketing, culinary arts, photography or any other specialty area. We would love to include you in upcoming events.
Friends of Senate House is pleased to offer volunteers free admission to the house and grounds and to selected lectures and activities.

Suggestion
If you are interested in giving back to your community, need community service credit, are a student looking to learn more about a career in history, or just want to help, consider volunteering at Senate House.

  • Admissions – Sit at the Front Desk and greet visitors to the site.
  • Interpreters – Have a history or education background? Do you simply love telling people about local history? Be trained as a volunteer interpreter and lead tours of Senate House!
  • Buildings and Grounds – Do you like working outside or have a particularly green thumb? Put it to use at Senate House.
  • Special Events – Senate House has multiple special events every year, with hands on activities and demonstrations. Volunteer to help us out during one of these events.
